CRITERION™ MacConkey Agar with MUG by Hardy Diagnostics is a selective and differential medium designed for the presumptive identification of Escherichia coli (E. coli). This medium is based on traditional MacConkey Agar but incorporates 4-methylumbelliferyl-β-D-glucuronide (MUG), a fluorogenic substrate used to detect β-glucuronidase activity.

Most E. coli strains hydrolyze MUG to produce a blue-white fluorescence under UV light, offering rapid confirmation while maintaining core MacConkey differentiation based on lactose fermentation.

This dual-indicator system makes the medium especially valuable for food safety testing, environmental water monitoring, and clinical microbiology, where fast and reliable detection of E. coli is essential.
