CRITERION™ Violet Red Bile Agar (VRBA) by Hardy Diagnostics is a selective medium formulated for the detection and enumeration of coliform organisms in food, dairy products, and other sanitary samples. VRBA is widely used in food safety testing and regulatory workflows, including FDA, ISO, and AOAC methodologies.

The medium contains crystal violet and bile salts, which inhibit Gram-positive bacteria, allowing coliforms—particularly Enterobacteriaceae such as E. coli and Enterobacter species—to grow and produce characteristic red or pink colonies surrounded by precipitated bile.
