CRITERION™ XLD Agar (Xylose Lysine Deoxycholate Agar) by Hardy Diagnostics is a selective and differential medium designed for the isolation of Gram-negative enteric pathogens, particularly Salmonella and Shigella, from fecal specimens and environmental or food-related samples.

This medium uses a combination of:

Xylose, lactose, and sucrose for carbohydrate fermentation

Lysine for decarboxylation reactions

Sodium deoxycholate as a selective agent against Gram-positive organisms

Ferric ammonium citrate and thiosulfate for hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) detection

These components create distinct, interpretable colony morphologies:

Salmonella: red colonies with black centers (H₂S production)

Shigella: red colonies, non-fermentative

Coliforms: yellow colonies (carbohydrate fermentation)

XLD Agar is a standard medium referenced in clinical microbiology, public health testing, food safety protocols, and environmental monitoring programs.

Key Features:

Highly selective for Salmonella and Shigella

Differential reactions support clear pathogen identification

Suppresses Gram-positive flora via deoxycholate

H₂S indicator system identifies black-centered colonies

500g wide-mouth bottle for efficient media preparation

Reliable performance in regulated diagnostic and food safety workflows

Manufactured to rigorous quality standards ensuring reproducible results
