MacConkey Agar with Sorbitol, Cefixime, and Tellurite (CT-SMAC), for E. coli O157, 15x100mm Plate
Hardy Diagnostics MacConkey Agar with Sorbitol, Cefixime, and Tellurite (CT-SMAC) is a selective and differential medium designed for the isolation and identification of Escherichia coli O157:H7 from food, water, and environmental samples.
This formulation, also known as CT-SMAC, incorporates sorbitol as a differential carbohydrate source and cefixime and potassium tellurite as selective agents to inhibit the growth of competing flora. The medium differentiates E. coli O157:H7 (which does not ferment sorbitol) from most other E. coli strains that appear as pink colonies due to sorbitol fermentation.
Each plate is precision-filled for consistent depth and pH balance, ensuring reliable colony morphology and reproducible results. The plates are optically clear for distortion-free viewing, heavy-duty to prevent breakage, and packaged in breathable sleeves that minimize condensation buildup during storage and incubation.
Features and Benefits:
• Formulated for detection and isolation of E. coli O157:H7
• Sorbitol-based differentiation for easy visual identification
• Cefixime and tellurite selective agents suppress competing flora
• Optically clear polystyrene plates ensure precise colony observation
• Stacking rings prevent slippage during incubation and transport
• Breathable packaging reduces condensation and maintains media quality
• Heavy-duty construction minimizes breakage during shipping
• Ready-to-use format saves time in quality and safety testing workflows
